About Generation VI & Kalos
A collector-friendly primer on the games, region, and what they introduced.
The sixth generation (Japanese: 第6世代 sixth generation, rendered as 第六世代 among fans) of Pokémon, commonly referred to by fans as Generation VI, is the sixth installment of the Pokémon video game series, starting with X and Y in 2013 and concluding with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire in 2014. This generation saw the debut of 72 new Pokémon species (for a total of 721), as well as the introduction of the Kalos region and the return of the Hoenn region. The games of the sixth generation are in full 3D and are presented on the Nintendo 3DS, a first for the core series.
X and Y occur two years after Black and White, thus being contemporaneous with Black. Looker, who has made appearances in the Generation IV and Generation V games, is found in Kalos.
The Kalos region (Japanese: カロス地方 Kalos region) is a region of the Pokémon world. It was the sixth core series region to be introduced and is the setting of X and Y and Legends: Z-A.

Games & gameplay highlights
Mechanics that shaped the era, plus a quick history of release.
The sixth generation of Pokémon was announced with the reveal of X and Y on January 8, 2013 through a Pokémon Direct. These games were released internationally in October of the same year; the tie-in animated series, XY, began airing one week later. Pokémon X and Y continued the established tradition of two paired games with slight variations between the two versions. Between them, these games introduced 72 new Pokémon species, 57 new moves, and 26 new Abilities. New gameplay advances were added, including a new battle mechanic called Mega Evolution. Among other changes, the games' type chart was modified for the first time since Generation II, some twelve years earlier: Ghost- and Dark moves now have normal effectiveness against Steels and a new Fairy type has been introduced.
- The second pairing of games in Generation VI was announced on May 7, 2014 through the official Pokémon websites. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, which are remakes of the third-generation Ruby and Sapphire, were released worldwide for the Nintendo 3DS in November 2014.
- The Generation VI games are not isolated from previous iterations and can communicate with the fifth-generation games Black through an online application known as Pokémon Bank. This feature, which is available for download from the Nintendo eShop, acts primarily as online storage for Pokémon species. It was first launched in Japan on December 25, 2013, although unexpectedly high demand forced it to close and relaunch the following January. International markets received the Pokémon Bank in February 2014. An extension of the Pokémon Bank called the Poké Transporter allows players to send Pokémon from their fifth-generation games to their X and Y cartridges via the cloud. Combining the Poké Transporter with the earlier Pal Park (from Diamond) and Poké Transfer (from Pokémon Black, White, Black 2, and White 2) allows players to transfer Pokémon from Ruby to their sixth-generation games.
Kalos: Geography & lore
Real-world inspiration and the in-game footprint.
According to Junichi Masuda, Kalos's name is derived from the Greek word κάλλος kállos, meaning beauty.
The geography of Kalos varies greatly within the region. The region is naturally bordered by a vast ocean to the west and northwest, and the eastern and southern borders are formed by mountain ranges. These borders give the region its signature star-like shape, as a large peninsula reaches out to the sea in the northwest, creating one point, and elsewhere the coastline, mountain ranges and rivers create the remaining four points. Kalos is made up of three distinct divisions, all with their own unique characteristics in both geography and Pokémon: Central Kalos, Coastal Kalos, and Mountain Kalos. The bustling Lumiose City is located near the point where all three divisions meet.

- The reference to Kalos, ruled by its king, having fought a war with neighboring regions 300 years ago may allude to the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714) and the Treaty of Utrecht (1713). This conflict, fought over the vacant Spanish throne, set France against a coalition of European powers—namely, the Holy Roman Empire, Great Britain, the Dutch Republic, and Duchy of Savoy—and concluded with the French House of Bourbon securing the Spanish crown. The timing is notable, as these events occurred 300 years before the release of X and Y in 2013. In addition, the Palace of Versailles—the likely real-world inspiration for Parfum Palace—had by then been completed in the form recognized today.
- Kalos having a rough history with the Galar region, as revealed in Legends: Z-A, is similar to the history between France and England, the latter of which Galar is based on.
- The English names of cities and towns in Kalos are derived from various ingredients and terminologies related to fragrances, while the Japanese names are derived from various ingredients and terminologies related to incenses.
- Likewise, the names in the European versions are derived from various terminologies related to art, befitting the region's etymology and theme of beauty.
